Tottenham set to welcome back Eric Dier for Manchester City trip

Tottenham are set to welcome back Eric Dier for this weekend’s trip to Manchester City in boost for Antonio Conte… but Spurs are concerned over the fitness of midfielder Oliver Skipp

  • Tottenham face Manchester City this week after suffering back-to-back losses
  • Antonio Conte’s side will be boosted by the return of key defender Eric Dier
  • Dier has been missing since Spurs’ 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on January 23
  • But Spurs are concerned about midfielder Oliver Skipp’s most recent injury

Antonio Conte is set to be boosted by the return of key defender Eric Dier, but concerns over the fitness of Oliver Skipp linger ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester City.

Tottenham – who are not pursuing a deal to sign Gareth Bale for a third time – have lost three Premier League matches in succession to put their Champions League qualification hopes under a cloud.

Dier has played just twice since the turn of the year, his last appearance coming in the loss to Chelsea on January 23.

Dier has been missing with a muscle problem ever since the 2-0 loss to Chelsea last month

Sportsmail understands there have been minor complications in identifying the severity of his muscular issue in recent weeks, hence the club’s cautious approach to his recovery.

However, the central defender is back training on the grass and there is hope he can rejoin full first-team training by the end of the week.

If he can come through his training schedule unscathed, then Dier could be available for this weekend’s daunting trip to champions City.

There is, however, less optimism regarding Skipp’s availability for the trip to the Etihad Stadium this weekend as he recovers from a thigh injury.

There has been a delay in the midfielder’s recovery, with increasing doubts that the 21-year-old, who hasn’t played since January 28, will be fit for this weekend.

Medics are taking a fluid approach to when Skipp might be available for selection; with Spurs playing Burnley next Wednesday before a visit to Leeds on Saturday week. But Skipp’s return to action is subject to some uncertainty behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are not expected to bring back Bale this summer after Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed he would leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.

Bale has been heavily linked with a return to Spurs, but the club are not currently looking to bring their former superstar back to north London ahead of next season.
