Tottenham are reportedly keen to sign Lecce star Morten Hjulmand at the end of the season, with the midfielder attracting plenty of interest due to his good form in the Serie A. Spurs are already drawing up their shortlist of targets for the summer, with a spending spree anticipated.
Antonio Conte’s side are currently fourth in the Premier League, though their consistency levels leave plenty to be desired. At their best, Spurs have proved that they are capable of taking points from any side in the league, though those successes are often followed by underwhelming performances against teams further down the table.
Tottenham will be keen to address this issue by improving the quality of their squad depth, with the club expected to spend their funds in all areas of the pitch. It has emerged that the club are already plotting their moves for the summer, with Calcio Mercato reporting that Denmark international Hjulmand has been identified as a top target.
The 23-year-old has ‘enchanted’ Spurs staff with his dominant presence in the centre of the park, with many feeling that he is capable of being a key figure at the club in the future. Though Tottenham aren’t alone in their admiration for Hjumland, with Roma, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund also in the race to secure his signature.
The midfielder came close to playing in the Premier League earlier this year after Southampton submitted a £12million bid for him in the January transfer window. However, Lecce quickly batted the offer away, feeling that his value will continue to soar in the immediate future and that he has unfinished business with the Serie A side.
With Conte’s future still uncertain due to his contract expiring at the end of the season, it remains to be seen whether the former Chelsea boss will pen a new deal in north London and push for Hjulmand or if transfer plans will change if he is replaced.
One transfer target that is unlikely to change is the plan to acquire a successor for veteran club captain Hugo Lloris at the end of the season, with the club feeling that it is the right time to find replace the goalkeeper.
Everton star Jordan Pickford was cited as a likely contender to be targeted, though Sean Dyche has confirmed that the England international has agreed on a new contract with the Toffees.
He said: “He’s a very good player, we know that. A good servant to this football club so far as well and will continue to be that I’m sure. I think it’s a sign he’s enjoying our new regime if you like. He’s accepting what we are looking to offer. He has been a fantastic player so we want him to continue doing that.
“Any way we can rub off on him and help him to continue his development will be great if he feels there is stuff. I’m learning about Jordan. He has been very open about himself and how he feels here. He has signed a new deal obviously, or is looking to. We think that one’s nearly there.”
