Tottenham revive transfer plan as discounted £21m asking price sparks interest

Tottenham have reportedly revived their interest in Roger Ibanez with Roma dropping their asking price to just £21million. Spurs have already brought in James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Manor Solomon this summer while final fees for Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski have also been paid.

But Tottenham are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements after a woeful season in front of their own goal last year. Only five other teams had a worse defensive record in the Premier League than Tottenham last season, including the three relegated sides.

Big changes were expected at the back this summer, but Spurs have been frustrated in their attempts to shake things up in defence. Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven have been touted as the main two targets, but Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg respectively have played hardball in negotiations so far.

It’s forced Tottenham to look at alternative targets in recent weeks with Roma star Ibanez on their shortlist. His original price tag was also seen as too much for Spurs, but Italian outlet Roma Giallorossa claim that valuation has dropped.

It’s stated that Roma are desperate to raise funds this summer and have cut their asking price by £7m to just £21m. Ibanez is already said to be a fan of Postecoglou, while the report adds that he also approves of Tottenham’s plan to sign Tapsoba as well.

It’s now claimed that Roma’s discounted asking price could persuade Tottenham to revive their interest. Bringing in a central defender is top of Postecoglou’s list of priorities in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

“That’s definitely our intention, absolutely,” said Postecoglou. “We’ve been working on it for a while and we’ll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.”

A replacement will now need to be signed for Davinson Sanchez after Tottenham agreed a bid from Spartak Moscow for the Colombian.

The central defender could still turn down a bid from the Russian side, but he’s been made available to leave. Tottenham are also listening to offers for Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga while Eric Dier has just one year remaining on his contract.
