Tottenham would consider a Manchester City offer of £120million for Harry Kane – if the Premier League champions commit to at least another £20m in add-ons.
The top-up sums would be based on City winning the Champions League and the Premier League with England captain Kane in the team.
There could even be an additional bonus payment if Kane, 28, breaks Alan Shearer's Premier League goal-scoring record as a City player.
The major add-on sum, though, would be based on City winning the Champions League for the first time.
What is certain is that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy won't sanction the sale of Kane unless he secures a record-breaking deal.
The feeling at Tottenham is that City signing Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100m actually drives up Kane's market value.
That view is based on Grealish being a fringe England player, while Kane is captain and therefore an established first-choice for his country.
So Levy won't accept City's initial offer of £100m for Kane, who has had representatives house-hunting in the north west since March.
In the meantime, following a high-profile meeting 10 days ago between Spurs and City officials over Kane, negotiations continue between the two clubs on a complex and acrimonious transfer.
And if a deal can't be struck, there's always the availability for City of Lionel Messi, following the shock announcement that he was leaving Barcelona.
But at the moment, that is a totally-separate issue to City's pursuit of Kane.
Speaking about a potential move for Messi this week, City boss Guardiola said: "We were convinced by Grealish and convinced Leo would stay at Barca. Right now he is not in our thoughts."
On Messi's shock Nou Camp departure, he added: "It was a surprise for everyone, me included.
“The president was clear on the reason why. I didn't speak with the player or president so I don't know what happened. But when you have a lot of money lost the decision has been made."
