Tottenham are reportedly willing to scrap the 50 per cent sell-on clause they inserted in Marcus Edwards’ contract at Sporting Lisbon to help them land Pedro Porro in January. Spurs are expected to be busy next month as Antonio Conte bids to maintain pressure on his side’s top-four rivals.
Conte spent big this past summer on the likes of Richarlison and Cristian Romero and Spurs have been reaping the rewards as they currently sit above Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. But the Spurs boss still isn’t fully content with his starting line-up, particularly down the right side of defence.
Emerson Royal has been the first-choice right-back this season, but he’s come under heavy criticism at times. Matt Doherty and Djed Spence are also fighting for a starting spot, but it appears as though Conte wants to go in another direction.
According to Portuguese outlet CM Journal, Tottenham are ‘determined’ to sign Porro next month. The Spaniard operates in a similar system to what Conte deploys at Tottenham with Porro playing as an advanced right wing-back.
And he’s proven to be a key part of Sporting Lisbon’s attacking threat, providing nine assists already this season. The 23-year-old appears to be Conte’s top target next month and Tottenham are reportedly willing to leave plenty of money on the table to make it happen.
The report claims that Spurs are willing to give up their 50 per cent rights to Edwards, who left Tottenham back in 2019. He joined Portuguese side Vitoria on a free transfer with Spurs able to negotiate a 50 per cent sell-on fee in exchange for Edwards moving for nothing.
Sporting then swooped in to snap Edwards up and Tottenham were reportedly able to transfer his sell-on clause to his new contract, instead of banking £4.5m. But it appears as though Tottenham are now prepared to drop that lucrative clause in a bid to land Porro.
The report states Tottenham are hopeful the negotiation tactic will be enough to tempt Sporting into selling the full-back. Tottenham’s last friendly before the season resumes on Boxing Day saw Emerson keep his spot at right-back.
But Japhet Tanganga was given a rare run out at centre-back while Doherty was deployed on the left wing. Spence got some minutes earlier this month in a friendly against Motherwell, but recent reports have indicated the summer signing could be loaned out next month.
