Tottenham may sign a new Greaves as surprise ‘contenders’ for target

Chelsea's next six Premier League fixtures

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Mason Mount in the summer transfer window. Mount’s future at Chelsea is becoming increasingly unclear ahead of a potential Premier League battle for his signature at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old’s contract discussions continue to stall ahead of his 2024 expiry in around 15 months.

It has led to Chelsea reportedly deciding to cash in on Mount this summer if they can’t agree terms to remove the risk of a free transfer.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool are most seriously interested in a deal for the England international as Jurgen Klopp looks to revamp his midfield.

Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are expected to leave as free agents once their contracts run out in July.

However, the report claims Tottenham are included in a cluster of Premier League rivals monitoring Mount’s situation.

It’s said that Spurs join Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United in keeping tabs on his availability.

The Champions League winner could join the likes of Jimmy Greaves by representing Tottenham after playing for Chelsea.

Greaves started his professional career at Chelsea, like Mount, before later joining Spurs and becoming a club legend. He was their record goalscorer before Harry Kane surpassed his exploits this season.

Eddie Howe and Erik ten Hag reportedly want to recruit an advanced midfielder in their second summers at their respective clubs.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola could be in need of a replacement for Ilkay Gundogan ahead of next term amid continued links to Barcelona.

But Tottenham’s picture is a little foggier, given the club’s head coach for the 2023/24 campaign is currently unknown after Antonio Conte’s sacking last Sunday.

After his recent Bayern Munich exit, Julian Nagelsmann is a popular candidate among fans, while Mauricio Pochettino is also available for an emotional return to north London.

Cristian Stellini will take interim charge of Spurs for the final 10 games of the season as the Lilywhites battle to maintain their top-four spot, which could be decisive in their hopes of luring Mount across the capital.

But it would be a move that wouldn’t do his relationship with Blues supporters any favours after growing up at the club since he was six.
