Tottenham may have shot themselves in the foot with Harry Kane as Man Utd lurk

Tottenham fans may have given Harry Kane some extra food for thought in advance of next season as the England talisman continues to weigh up the idea of staying in north London by signing a new and improved contract. The 29-year-old’s existing deal will run out in the summer of 2024 and it has been widely reported that a move elsewhere could soon be on the horizon for Kane if he fails to commit his future to Spurs over the coming weeks.
Manchester United are said to be keen on bringing Kane to Old Trafford before next season gets underway, with Erik ten Hag looking to improve his attacking options with the capture of a new first-choice striker this summer. It will undoubtedly be a difficult decision for Kane if he eventually opts to push for a move to United after spending the entirety of his professional career at Spurs, where he remains a fan favourite having recently become the club’s all-time top scorer by surpassing Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing record.
Although Kane knows that he is loved by Tottenham supporters, it will almost certainly have hurt him to see thousands of empty seats during the lap of appreciation after what might have been his final home game for the club on Saturday. A large number of fans did not bother to stay after Spurs were beaten by Brentford in their penultimate Premier League match as the players trudged around the pitch after the full-time whistle to applaud the remaining fans who had remained in their seats.
Kane cut a particularly solemn figure as he ventured on a lap of the turf on his own, applauding all four corners of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a gesture that could prove to be his final goodbye on home soil if United come calling this summer. Although the fans who left would obviously not be to blame in the event of Kane’s departure, their absence could be poised to play a small part in his thought process as he continues to mull over what the next few years might hold for him at Tottenham.

The club’s lack of silverware could also risk pushing Kane to United if he decides to give himself the best chance of winning the first major trophy of his career, with time running out for the Spurs forward to do so as he approaches his 30th birthday this summer. The north Londoners have not won anything of note since lifting the League Cup all the way back in 2008, with Kane having made no secret of his desire to finally add a trophy to his cabinet when quizzed on the topic over the last few years.
Tottenham have done little to suggest that their drought will be coming to an end any time soon over the course of this season, with their Champions League campaign fizzling out against AC Milan in March just a few days after they were dumped out of the FA Cup by second-tier Sheffield United. It remains to be seen whether Kane’s patience will eventually reach its breaking point before the start of the new campaign but everybody connected with Spurs will be desperate for him to stay in order to aid their own hopes of challenging England’s elite at the next time of asking.

Kane will not even be playing Champions League football in 2023/24 if he ends up staying at Tottenham for another year, although he recently suggested that he would settle for a Europa Conference League trophy next season with the simple aim of finally ending his career-long wait for silverware with Spurs before it is too late.
“You can’t disrespect any competition that you play in,” said Kane earlier this year. “It’s one of those, if you end up in the Conference League and win it, it’s worth it. If you don’t, then people probably look at it as an inconvenience. But when you’ve been at a club where we haven’t won a trophy for 15 years, if we do end up in it, it could be an opportunity to put that to bed.”
