Tanguy Ndombele is set to remain at Tottenham beyond tonight’s transfer deadline, despite both parties being keen to go their separate ways this summer.

The midfielder has been left out of his side’s opening three games of the season amid speculation that he would be departing north London.

The 24-year-old has apparently been a target for Bayern Munich this summer, but will not be leaving the capital according to Sky Sports.

Reports from Sky Germany suggest Bayern were keen on a swap deal for Ndombele, with Corentin Tolisso moving in the opposite direction.

The German giants were apparently willing to offer Tottenham the French midfielder and £17.2m in exchange for Ndombele, but Spurs rebuffed the approach.

It means Ndombele is now stuck in north London, despite apparently telling club chiefs he would prefer to leave during the current transfer window.

The latest developments could mean that Tottenham no longer chase the signing of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

It was reported on Tuesday morning that Spurs have been negotiating a deal to bring the Portugal international to north London.

Ndombele has struggled to make an impression in England since joining Spurs from Lyon for £53.8million two years ago.

He has shown flashes of brilliance, but has been inconsistent and has not lived up to the potential he clearly possesses.

Ndombele did force his way into Jose Mourinho’s thinking last season when the Portuguese was in charge and appeared 33 times in the Premier League.

But he fell out of favour towards the end of the campaign due to concerns around his fitness.

The player has apparently endured problematic relationships with previous managers Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Ryan Mason, with Nuno Espirito Santo the latest boss to cast doubts on the midfielder.

“What happened in the past I can’t even think about – I don’t mention out of respect,” Nuno said recently.

“What I can tell you is that Tanguy is with us, he works, but we have to speak honestly and to take the best out of Tanguy – [it] has to come from himself.

“I don’t want to go much further than that but it has to come from himself. We already had a chance to talk but it must come from himself.

“I said it before, my job here is not to convince players to play for Tottenham Hotspur – it is to prepare players to play for Tottenham Hotspur.”

It remains to be seen whether Nuno will be quick to give Ndombele another chance to impress in a Spurs shirt after the transfer deadline has passed.

Nuno’s side have been in fine form without the midfielder and sit top of the Premier League table after opening their campaign with three victories.
