Tottenham have made a bid of £25million for Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal as boss Nuno Espirito Santo attempts to land his fifth signing of the summer. The Catalan giants had already rejected Spurs’ initial offer of £17.15m plus Serge Aurier for the player.

Tottenham are desperate to land a new right-back this summer, with Japhet Tanganga occupying the position during the side’s first three Premier League games of the season.

Matt Doherty has been named on the bench for those matches, while Aurier has dropped down the pecking order and now appears to be surplus to requirements in north London.

Barcelona are under pressure to cut their wage bill at the Nou Camp as they look to come in line with La Liga’s spedning limits.

Earlier this summer, Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta said that the club is in €1.35billion of debt.

Spurs will be hoping their improved offer will be enough to turn the heads of Barca chiefs.
