Tottenham let down by four players as Liverpool dealt European blow

Klopp gives thoughts on Liverpool's midfield department

Tottenham Hotspur almost succumbed to the same fate as they did against Newcastle two weeks ago after a torrid opening 25 minutes at Anfield. Fraser Forster was beaten between the sticks three times in the opening quarter as manager Ryan Mason was left with his head in his hands.

But a spirited comeback from Tottenham almost paid off. Following goals from Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah from the spot, Harry Kane flipped the Premier League tie on its head with a stunning volley on the stroke of halftime.

Then Heung-Min Son closed the gap to 3-2 with a tidy brace before Richarlison headed home the winner in extra time. But the travelling fans weren’t able to celebrate for long as Diogo Jota capped off a fast break with an excellent finish to make it 4-3.

The winner courtesy of a misplaced pass from Lucas Moura.

Fraser Forster

With Hugo Lloris ruled out of the trip to Anfield due to injury, backup Fraser Forster took his place between the sticks. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to make much of an impact, conceding three goals and struggling to even get a hand on the ball all game.

Pedro Porro

Completely to blame for the first goal, Pedro Porro left Curtis Jones in acres of space as he calmy slotted away a half-volley at the back post. His long shots and set pieces looked dangerous at times but nothing that really troubled Allison Becker in the Liverpool goal.

Eric Dier

Probably the worst of the lot. Eric Dier looked completely incapable at the back all afternoon. Whether it was clumsily clearing the ball to Luis Diaz or lazily jogging back as Cody Gakpo streamed into the box to set up Liverpool’s second, Dier was awful and there’s no way of dressing it up any other way.

Christian Romero

Christian Romero’s foul on Cody Gakpo inside the box capped off a nightmare opening 25 minutes for Spurs. For a player of his experience and quality, lunging in so erratically on the Dutchman was completely unacceptable.

He nearly redeemed himself with a spectacular leaping volley that hammered off the woodwork early in the second half, but his defensive display was subpar.
