Tottenham Hotspur were the butt of jokes on Sunday morning after suffering an embarrassing email howler after England’s World Cup quarter-final exit. France dumped the Three Lions out in Qatar, but fans would’ve thought differently judging by a finding from Spurs’ mailing list.
England’s World Cup hopes were dashed with the 2-1 defeat, ending a third successive promising tournament in agonising fashion. Gareth Southgate’s side were the more convincing at Al Bayt Stadium but faced more late penalty agony from the least likely of players.
Aurelien Tchouameni fired France ahead from range after 17 minutes before Harry Kane equalised from the spot shortly after half-time. Olivier Giroud’s glancing header sent England behind again before Kane blazed his second penalty over the bar, helping Les Bleus book a semi-final date with Morocco next week.
Tottenham must have expected their star striker to inspire England to a memorable win if their automated emails are anything to go by. This morning, a Twitter user shared an email he had received from the club at 11am, reading: “England are through to the semi-finals! Book a private screening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”

There will likely be less interest in watching France take on Morocco than if England had progressed to face the African underdogs. Argentina must navigate past Croatia in the other semi-final to keep Lionel Messi’s hopes of lifting the World Cup in his illustrious career alive.
Croatia and Morocco recorded shock wins against tournament favourites Brazil and Portugal, respectively, potentially ending Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo’s dreams of adding the World Cup to their legacies. It makes for two interesting clashes, though clashes that England’s heroes will have to watch from home after leaving their Al Wakrah base just before Spurs’ email blunder.

There is no shame in falling to the sword of the reigning world champions, especially after going more than toe-to-toe. But it’s the third time in as many tournaments under Southgate that a promising campaign produced so much belief, only for it all to come crashing down with one error.
Rather than watching Kane on a big screen at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, fans will be able to see the England captain in the flesh in a few weeks. Spurs’ season resumes with a Boxing Day trip to Brentford before Antonio Conte’s men host Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.
