Tottenham injury latest as Bentancur, Maddison, Van de Ven, Richarlison all out
Tottenham are dealing with an injury crisis that was made even worse in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday. While Spurs will welcome the suspended Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero back in their next Premier League outing, the north Londoners are still without multiple injured players. Express Sport rounds up everything we know about those on the Tottenham treatment table…
Rodrigo Bentancur
Bentancur is only just back from a knee ligament tear and was making his first start of the season against Villa. But he went down after a Matty Cash tackle and after returning to the pitch for a minute, was then forced off. Ange Postecoglou said: “It is his ankle I think.
“It wasn’t a great tackle. It’s the last thing we needed, another injury. So disappointed to lose him but we’re yet to see the extent of it.” The Uruguayan will undergo scans in the next few days and his manager added: “We’ll get Biss [Yves Bissouma] back for next week but we might have lost Bentancur.”
James Maddison
Playmaker Maddison is out until the New Year with an ankle injury sustained in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea earlier this month. Postecoglou admitted days after that the issue “is a lot worse than we thought”.
The three-goal, five-assist Maddison said: “Will need a period of time away from the pitch to get this one right. See you in the New Year Spurs fans, I’ll be back better & stronger for sure, promise you that.”

Micky van de Ven
Like Maddison, Van de Ven went off injured against Chelsea as he pulled up with a nasty muscle injury. He pulled up while chasing down the ball. Postecoglou labelled it a “fairly significant hamstring injury” and predicted “at least a couple of months out” for the Dutchman.
The centre-back had started the season strongly after joining from Wolfsburg. He posted a picture of himself accompanied with an hourglass emoji recently but he is still unlikely to play again until January.
Richarlison
Brazilian forward Richarlison underwent groin surgery earlier this month with Spurs saying he would return to training “in the coming weeks”. The forward had been struggling with a pubic bone problem for eight months before going under the knife.
He said before it was confirmed he would have surgery: “I think the time has come to rest, take a break. Let’s see the next few days. Soon I’ll do what’s best for me.” It is anticipated he will be back by mid-December.
Ashley Phillips
Teenage centre-back Phillips was not in the squad to face Villa after sustaining a knock while with England’s under-21s. Postecoglou explained: “Phillips picked up an ankle injury and out for a little while, perhaps a month out. It’s a really disappointing one for him.”

Pape Matar Sarr
Senegal midfielder Sarr has a “little issue” that he picked up while playing for his country over the international break. The 21-year-old missed training on Friday and was not in the squad against Villa but Spurs will hope he’s passed fit to face Manchester City this Sunday (December 3).
Manor Solomon
Spurs hope to welcome Israeli attacker Solomon back in December after he underwent surgery on a meniscus injury in his right knee. Solomon wrote on social media at the start of October: “Not an easy one to take for me personally, but I’ve already started my rehabilitation in order to come back as soon as possible and stronger than ever. Thank you all for your support, looking forward to seeing you soon on the pitch.”
Ryan Sessegnon
Ryan Sessegnon could be back before 2024 after returning to light training. He had surgery on his hamstring in the summer and Postecoglou called him a “longer term” absentee in October and said: “Sess is still a fair bit of time away.”
Ivan Perisic
Perisic’s season is over after he sustained a “complex anterior cruciate ligament injury” which required surgery. The Croatian’s knee problem may mean the 34-year-old has played his last ever match for Spurs given his contract expires in the summer.
Alfie Whiteman
Back-up goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman underwent surgery in August on an ankle injury sustained in pre-season. A statement added: “He will now begin his rehabilitation with our medical team and a date for his to return to training will be determined in due course.” It is unclear when he will return.
