Tottenham ‘identity top two midfield targets’ as Chelsea transfer hijack plotted
Tottenham are reportedly targeting Conor Gallagher and Aston Villa defensive midfielder Douglas Luiz in preparation for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s departure. The experienced Dane is now considering a fresh challenge after three years in north London with Ange Postecoglou set to build his new-look midfield around the varying qualities of Yves Bissouma and James Maddison, respectively.
While Hojbjerg’s future is not currently set in stone, he has been the subject of initial talks with Atletico Madrid.
Tottenham are ready to part company with the ex-Southampton skipper and are already making plans to replace the 27-year-old despite ‘slow’ negotiations with the La Liga giants.
The Mail are reporting that Gallagher and Brazil international Douglas Luiz top the bill for Postecoglou and Daniel Levy due to the fact they’re already Premier League proven.
Gallagher is part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans at Chelsea this summer but could yet leave the club if a suitable offer arrives.

West Ham are also tracking the England international and have already held initial talks with Chelsea over a swoop for the ex-Crystal Palace loanee.
Meanwhile, Luiz is tied down to a long-term contract at Villa Park having nearly previously joined Arsenal in the summer of 2022.
He has made huge strides since the appointment of Unai Emery and has publicly disclosed his satisfaction with the Villa project after helping the Midlands club seal a long-awaited return to Europe.
Tottenham are also said to be tracking Chelsea target Gabri Veiga, who has caught the eye at Celta Vigo.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has also been watched by Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain following a standout breakthrough season at Balaidos.
Chelsea boss Pochettino is understood to be a huge fan of the player and the Blues need bodies through the door as soon as possible if they’re to fight it out for Champions League qualification next season.
Spurs do have other priorities though particularly in defence where two centre-backs remain under discussion.
Talks are ongoing with Bayer Leverkusen for Edmond Tapsoba and negotiations are also continuing with Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham’s defensive frailties were once again highlighted on Tuesday as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to West Ham in Perth during the first match of their Australia tour.
Blackburn Rovers youngster Ashley Phillips is due to join the club but he is regarded as a signing for the future.
Postecoglou has already confirmed he is in the market for a centre-back, saying: “Yeah, I think that’s definitely our intention, absolutely.
“We’ve been working on it for a while and we’ll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.”
