Tottenham ‘have to pay more’ than for Udogie to appoint Arne Slot

Cristian Stellini sacked as Spurs’ acting head coach with Ryan Mason taking over

Tottenham Hotspur have identified Arne Slot as an attractive alternative if they fail to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as head coach this summer, according to reports. However, the Lilywhites face paying a hefty fee to lure him away from Feyenoord, presenting a significant risk.

Nagelsmann is among Daniel Levy’s leading managerial targets after he exited the running for the Chelsea job, soon to be occupied by former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

But the Independent report that Slot is also high on the club’s shortlist, and he could become the prime candidate if Nagelsmann rejects a second London post.

Slot is on the verge of guiding Feyenoord to their first Dutch Eredivisie title since 2017, leading PSV Eindhoven by eight points.

And according to Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen, the club would only allow him to depart at the end of the campaign for a large sum of cash.

Driessen claims that Tottenham may have to splash out as much as £22million to secure Slot’s services.

He told Feyenoord Pings: “Slot will leave at the end of the year. Slot has given his word to all of Feyenoord because he just signed a contract.

“It says that he will be Feyenoord’s trainer until 2025 and will only be allowed to leave in 2024 for a limited transfer fee.

“Imagine Tottenham willing to pay 25 million for him, then Feyenoord might be willing to talk.

“He has to go to such a club, not to Leeds United or Crystal Palace. They are also in the market, but he cannot play the football he wants there.”

If Spurs were to commit £22m to appoint Slot, it would eclipse the fee they paid for four of their seven signings last summer.

Antonio Conte recruited Destiny Udogie in a deal worth up to £21m, while Djed Spence arrived for a fee rising to £20m.

Tottenham also acquired Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic on free transfers in what was Conte’s only summer window as head coach.

Levy is under increased pressure to ensure his next managerial appointment is right, so such an outlay would pose a significant risk.
