Tottenham face a race against time to sign Houssem Aouar before the transfer window shuts on August 31 and if they are to get a deal over the line, a potential swap deal could be viable. As things stand, funds remain limited in north London as Fabio Paratici is still targeting a number of different signings for the club’s squad.

Spurs want another defender, a right-back and a new striker meaning they may have to make sacrifices along the way.

There is money to spend though, as seen when Spurs struck a £60million agreement with Inter Milan for Lautaro Martinez.

Lyon are notoriously stubborn negotiators though and they could be set to demand a premium for Aouar once again, just as they did last summer.

Arsenal were told they’d have to play close to £50million to sign the central midfielder and the Gunners were therefore forced to walk away from the table.

With Tottenham now reportedly setting their sights on the 23-year-old, Fabio Paratici could look to kill two birds with one stone by including any of three players in a player-plus-cash deal…

Tanguy Ndombele

Ndombele is said to be unhappy in north London and he is yet to feature in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad so far this season.

A return to Lyon could be the best possible solution for the Frenchman, who looks unlikely to force his way back into Nuno’s plans at the moment.

ESPN have previously claimed Spurs offered Lyon the chance to re-sign Ndombele as part of a deal for Aouar but negotiations failed to get off the ground.

Now we are edging closer to the transfer deadline and Tottenham would surely prefer to recruit a player that could improve their side, as opposed to keeping another who doesn’t want to be there.

There’s no doubt that Ndombele is a top talent but he does not seem in the right frame of find to contribute at the moment meaning Daniel Levy should consider cutting his losses.

Serge Aurier

Similarly to Ndombele, Aurier has been excluded from Tottenham’s squads so far this season and was also left out of tomorrow’s travelling party for the UEFA Conference League clash with Pacos de Ferreira.

Spurs are looking to move Aurier on and would like to sign a new right-back before the window shuts on August 31 despite Japhet Tanganga’s brilliant performance against Manchester City.

A return to France could be the perfect solution for Aurier, having previously played in Ligue 1 with Toulouse and Paris Saint-Germain.

Although his value is nowhere near that of Ndombele, Aurier could help drive the price down for Aouar and his pedigree should make him of interest to Lyon.

Moussa Sissoko

Finally, Spurs are also looking to move Moussa Sissoko on this summer and a return to France could also prove beneficial for the Les Blues international.

Although there are stylistic differences, Sissoko could broadly and immediately replace Aouar until Lyon find a suitable replacement.

While the 32-year-old still has his critics, he has still been a hugely important player for both clubs and country in the past five years.

Sissoko still has more to give and a return to France could prove to be an attractive proposition at this stage of his career amid interest from the Middle East.

He still has two years remaining on his current deal and Tottenham would therefore be keen to get him off the books.
