Mauricio Pochettino is still attempting to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer, according to reports. Pochettino was linked with a move back to former club Tottenham following the sacking of Jose Mourinho. Spurs are still yet to appoint a permanent successor to Mourinho, over two months since he was relieved of his duties.

Many reports claim Pochettino is not happy at PSG despite only becoming manager in January.

However, the club have stood firm and sporting director Leonardo says a one-year extension in the Argentine’s contract – taking his deal to 2023 – has been activated.

Tottenham have approached a raft of managers in recent weeks, including Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso.

However, Pochettino could ultimately be available soon if he gets his way.

Speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles says the 49-year-old is still pining for an exit from PSG and a return to Spurs cannot be completely ruled out.

“He was obviously open to talking to Tottenham, Tottenham briefed that they were open to bringing him back,” Castles said.

“It seemed that Paris Saint-Germain’s actions had cut that path off.

“What I’m being told is that Pochettino is continuing to put pressure on Paris Saint-Germain, to put pressure on the Qatari owners, to allow him to leave this summer, regardless of Leonardo exercising that option which has made it more expensive for him to get out.

“So there you have at least the potential that Daniel Levy can get the man back who he seems to regret having sacked.

“It would certainly, from a PR perspective, wash away a terrible few weeks for them, with failure on successive attempts to appoint a range of candidates.”

Meanwhile, former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend believes former team-mate Ryan Mason – who was interim following the departure of Mourinho – should be given a shot at the job full time.

“I’ve had enough, just give it to Mason and get on with it,” Townsend told talkSPORT.

“Give it to him for a year, see how he gets on and then reassess next summer.

“If you were going to get a top manager in, fair enough, [Erik] Ten Haag, Pochettino, Conte, but after Conte turned it down it was clear nobody wanted the job.

“If you’re going down to Gattuso, there’s clearly nothing else out there.

“So if nobody wants the job, give it to a man in Ryan Mason who dealt with everything well under the circumstances. He dealt with all the European Super League fallout, he fronted the Harry Kane fallout on his own and ended the season well with Spurs by getting them into Europe… ish.

“He deserves a fair crack at it and hopefully Daniel Levy does look into giving Ryan another go at it next season.”
