Tottenham have fined three players for breaking government lockdown rules on household mixing.

Despite Sergio Reguilon stating that he would be alone on Christmas Day, which led to a present from manager Jose Mourinho, the Spaniard joined Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso in celebrating on the 25th.

A Spurs spokesperson said: “We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image.

“We regularly remind all our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example.”

The Athletic have now reported that the club responded to their breach of Tier 4 restrictions and handed the trio a fine, and added that the Metropolitan Police were made aware of the initial incident.

A spokesperson said after both Tottenham and West Ham were spoken to: “We remind all Londoners that it is up to all of us to make the right choices in order to slow the spread of the virus."

Mourinho said that the photo had come as a ‘negative’ surprise, and that he was left feeling disappointed.

While Lo Celso is out until February with injury, Reguilon is expected to be in the squad to take on Brentford on Tuesday with Lamela missing out for an unknown reason.

Mourinho said of his gift to Reguilon: “An amazing gift. An amazing gift. A Portuguese piglet, which is amazing for Portuguese and Spanish (people).

“So I gave it to him because I was told that he was going to spend Christmas on his own. And I had this thought about him. He was not alone, as you could see.

“And as a club of course we feel disappointed because we give the players all the education, we give the players all the conditions, and of course we are not happy. It was a negative surprise for us.”

Reguilon had told AS : “On Christmas day, who knows that I am alone. We got to training on the 25th at 3pm and I had a box on my site.

“I open it and it was a suckling pig already cooked. He told me 'I know you are alone at Christmas so you don't have to cook dinner and eat well.'

“He has details that people don't know on a day-to-day basis, but for a footballer who is aware of how you are apart from football is very important.”
