Tottenham eye move for Man Utd outcast Lingard – but won’t sign star this month

Wantaway attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard may be forced to wait until the end of the season to force his exit from Manchester United.

The Englishman has found his opportunities at Old Trafford limited so far this season.

Despite the change of management from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Ralf Rangick has continued to warm the Red Devils bench.

However, with the World Cup at the end of the year, Lingard appears to have decided to give himself the best possible opportunity to be included in Gareth Southgate’s plans by leaving his boyhood club in search of more regular game time elsewhere.

According to football.london, Tottenham have made contact with Lingard over bringing him to North London.

The England international is out of contract at the end of the season and this month’s transfer window is United’s last chance to receive a fee for the 29-year-old.

But the report goes on to state that Spurs are prepared to wait until the summer in order to secure the signature of the versatile playmaker due to how United may be reluctant to strengthen a top-four rival.

With his stamina, pace and versatility, it is no surprise that Antonio Conte is keen on signing the former West Ham loanee given the different roles that he could play in his system.

Lingard could be seen as a replacement for a number of Spurs stars who are expected to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this month.

Netherlands international Steven Bergwijn has been closely linked with a return to the Eredivisie with a move to Ajax, who have already seen a £15m bid for the winger rejected.

And if Lingard is to be deployed in a more central area, potentially as a no.10 behind Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, then he could be viewed as a replacement for Tanguy Ndombele.

The Frenchman was booed off of the pitch on Sunday when he was substituted against Morecambe, who were winning 1-0 at the time, before storming down the tunnel.

Since joining the club from Lyon, the midfielder has struggled to find form in the Premier League, with questions being raised over his work rate when the ball isn't at his feet. He has since been linked with a move to the Serie A.

It remains to be seen whether Conte is able to persuade Lingard that he is the man to get Lingard’s career back on track, or whether the midfielder will be swayed towards a move elsewhere.
