Liverpool’s attempts to lure Kylian Mbappe to Anfield could hinge on the future of Spurs striker Harry Kane.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward is looking for a move away from north London this summer, and has emerged as a player of interest for Paris Saint-Germain.
Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG have been making good noises about keeping their star striker Kylian Mbappe in the transfer window, but are drawing up a list of targets who could potentially replace the Frenchman’s goals if he does leave the club.
And Kane is believed to be Pochettino’s preferred targets to lead the line in Paris.
The French outfit are one of the only clubs in Europe capable of matching Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s £150million asking price for Kane.
And if Mbappe opts against signing a new contract in the next month then Pochettino and his Paris bosses will make an approach for the England striker.
Only if PSG are confident of signing a world-class replacement will they begin to listen to offers for Mbappe, leaving Liverpool’s hopes of signing Mbappe hinging on Kane and Levy.
Kane enjoyed another disappointing evening for England as the forward went goalless against Scotland in the Group D stalemate at Wembley on Friday.
And Kane’s frustrations are believed to be in-part due to uncertainty over his future.
“I want to play the Champions League… I want to be playing in the biggest games,” Kane said last month.
“I’ve said before, I’d never say that I’d stay at Spurs for the rest of my career. I’d never say that I would leave Spurs.
“It’s a moment in my career where I have to reflect and see where I’m at. Ultimately it’s going to be down to me, how I feel and what’s going to be the best for me and my career.”
Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are looking to strengthen their front-line this summer in a hope to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.
Both Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane suffered disappointing campaigns in-front of goal last time out, leaving Klopp keen to bring in a new top-class forward.
And France’s Mbappe is Klopp’s preferred choice, with the 22-year-old seen as the perfect profile for the German coach’s style of attack.
Anfield chiefs are willing to wait until after Euro 2020 to see if Mbappe signs a new PSG contract before making their move.
