Tottenham drop interest in Graham Potter with Belgium boss Roberto Martinez in contention

Tottenham dropped their interest in appointing Graham Potter as their new manager this summer because of Brighton’s massive demands over a compensation package.

The North Londoners were shocked to find they would have to pay a whopping £20million to secure the services of the Seagulls boss and his backroom staff ahead of the new campaign.

Potter only signed a six-year deal early last season as Brighton looked to fend off potential interest in their highly-regarded coach.

And that definitely did the trick with regards Spurs’ chase for the ex-Swansea chief – described by Pep Guardiola as England’s ‘best young manager’.

With cash tight in N17 amid the financial losses incurred during the COVID pandemic, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy opted to end his pursuit of Potter.

That means the club’s long and frustrating search for a full-time successor to Jose Mourinho continues – with the pressure growing on new general manager Fabio Paratici to deliver.

So far, in addition to Potter, Spurs have missed out on ex-manager Mauricio Pochettino, German coach Julian Nagelsmann and Italian pair Antonio Conte and Gennaro Gattuso.

Next up on the list of potential candidates is former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo while Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is still in contention.

They are also keen on talking to Steven Gerrard, although it seems unlikely the ex-Liverpool star would be willing to walk out on Scottish champions Rangers at this stage.
