Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy must up the club’s offer for Cristian Romero, according to reports. Spurs are claimed to have bid £34.2million plus a further £8.5m in bonuses for Romero. However, Atalanta are not currently willing to accept that deal.

Romero has emerged as Tottenham’s top defensive target in this window.

With Toby Alderweireld set to join Qatar outfit Al-Duhail, Spurs are in need of reinforcement at the back.

Romero impressed for Atalanta last season on loan from Juventus and the Serie A side are set to take up an option to sign him on a permanent deal.

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport says Atalanta will pay around £13.6m for Romero before looking to gain a hefty profit.

But despite Spurs’ offer being well above the £13.6m Atalanta will pay, it still isn’t enough.

Atalanta want a guaranteed £47m for Romero, not including bonus payments.

That would make Romero Spurs’ second-most expensive signing of all time behind Tanguy Ndombele.

It remains to be seen if Levy would be willing to pay that much for the 23-year-old.

Spurs are already claimed to have agreed a contract with Romero.

Fabrizio Romano says personal terms have been finalised and Atalanta are already looking at replacements.

Romano tweeted: “Talks ongoing between Atalanta and Tottenham for Cristian Romero after personal terms agreed, as revealed today. €55m price tag to be discussed also including add ons. #THFC

“Atalanta planning for many options to replace Romero if he leaves: Sven Botman is still in the list.”

Last week, Italian football agent Furio Valcareggi had high praise for Romero.

Valcareggi said Romero’s influence on a team at the back is similar to that of Cristiano Ronaldo at the other end of the pitch.

“He’s a great player, very good,” the agent told TuttoMercatoWeb.

“[Cesare] Prandelli, who managed him, said that he had never seen such a strong player.

“If I were Paratici and Tottenham, I would take him immediately. You will put the defence in place for 10 years.

“Just like if you take [Kalidou] Koulibaly, he sets your defence in one fell swoop. He’s the Ronaldo of defending.”

Spurs completed the loan signing of goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta on Saturday, with the option to make the deal permanent.

Sevilla’s Bryan Gil also looks set to join, in a player-plus cash deal with Erik Lamela heading in the opposite direction.
