The powers that be at Tottenham are not expecting Jose Mourinho to remain in charge beyond the end of the current season, according to reports. The experienced Portuguese boss, who was appointed by Daniel Levy in November 2019, has been widely criticised in recent weeks amid his side’s failure to deliver on their strong start to the campaign, with Spurs likely to miss out on Champions League qualification for the second year in a row.
The north London club have lost seven matches from their last 12 Premier League outings, and failed to steer their European ambitions back on track on Friday evening as they were held to a draw by Everton at Goodison Park.
The result leaves Spurs five points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham United with just six games remaining until the end of the season.
The match was somewhat overshadowed by a late injury to star man Harry Kane, who limped off with what appeared to be yet another ankle injury in stoppage time.
Mourinho will have the opportunity to provide Tottenham with their first trophy since 2008 in the Carabao Cup final later this month, but if Kane is ruled out of the clash with Manchester City at Wembley Stadium, there could be further heartbreak on the cards for Spurs.
The club’s poor form since the turn of the year has cast the 58-year-old’s future in doubt, with RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann among a number of candidates to have been mentioned in connection with a potential vacancy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Levy has been left with a big decision to make ahead of next season, and it appears as though the controversial Spurs chief could be approaching the end of his tether with regards to his faith in Mourinho.
There is a ‘growing belief’ that the former Chelsea boss will be relieved of his duties at the end of the current campaign, according to football.london.
The report highlights a number of fatal flaws that have damaged Mourinho’s reputation within the club, including his treatment of the likes of Dele Alli and Gareth Bale.
Decisions over certain players are said to have ’caused strain behind the scenes’, while those at the club are also believed to be painfully aware of their overwhelming dependence on Kane’s influence.
The 28-year-old has almost single-handedly maintained Tottenham’s faint hopes of a top-four finish this season with 21 goals in the Premier League since the beginning of the campaign.
He has been linked with a summer exit as a result of his side’s inability to win trophies, with club chiefs harbouring significant fears over the gaping hole that he would leave at the top of the pitch.
Mourinho’s characteristic style of play is said to be another stumbling block causing unrest within Tottenham’s ranks.
His defensively-minded tactics have been devastatingly effective on a number of previous occasions but Spurs have lacked resilience at the back for the vast majority of the campaign.
It remains to be seen whether Levy will decide to pull the trigger before the start of next season, with Mourinho’s likely failure to achieve Champions League qualification threatening to put an end to his stay in north London.
The financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have placed greater emphasis on sealing a place in the Premier League’s top four.
If Spurs miss out once again, it could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back with Levy unlikely to remain patient for too much longer.
