Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy accepts Jose Mourinho is right in wanting to improve his defence this summer, according to reports. Tottenham face a fight to qualify for next season’s Champions League after dropping more points from winning positions in the last couple of weeks.
Mourinho’s future has been questioned despite Spurs having the chance to end their 13-year trophy drought when they face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final later this month.
The Portuguese brought in seven new signings last summer, including three defenders.
Left-back Sergio Reguilon has impressed, while centre-back Joe Rodon is still inexperienced at the top level and right-back Matt Doherty has struggled since his arrival from Wolves.
Transfer expert Duncan Castles says Mourinho is set for disappointment in the summer window, as not all his transfer demands will be reciprocated by the club.

However, Levy agrees improvement at the back should be the priority with the funds available.
Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast: “[A change in players] is something that Mourinho wants but he’s aware that it’s going to be difficult to do in the transfer window coming because Tottenham at present are not prepared to put a big budget into reinforcements.
“Although they accept his argument that the defence at the very least needs to be upgraded in the summer if they are to do what Mourinho was brought into the club to do, which is to compete at the top end of the table.”
Tottenham are currently seventh in the Premier League table, six points off West Ham in fourth.

The Hammers, Liverpool and Chelsea are set to provide strong competition for a top four spot.
Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp says failing to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition would be deemed a “massive failure” by the club’s hierarchy.
“I think the only way it will be deemed a success by the owners and people than run the club, Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy, is Champions League football next season,” Redknapp told talkSPORT.
“Anything other than Champions League football will be deemed as a massive failure.
“If they don’t make the Champions League I think it will be a really disappointing year for Tottenham, even if they win the Carabao Cup. The top four is a must for them.”
