Tottenham cannot afford to sack Mourinho now as top replacements are lined up

Jose Mourinho is set to remain at Tottenham until at least the end of the season despite a worrying run of performances under the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss.

Having briefly gone top of the Premier League in December, Spurs are now 17 points off top spot following four defeats in their last five league outings.

Although supporters do have April’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City to look forward to, there is plenty of pressure on Mourinho who is expected to sure Champions League qualification.

With sources now claiming that the club will wait until the end of the season to make any decision on the future of the Portuguese, his wages could prove a stumbling block.

The Mail report that the cost of sacking Mourinho is a key factor for chairman Daniel Levy, who is intent on making a success of the appointment.

The Champions League winning boss is said to be one of the best paid managers in the world on £15m a year, and a substantial severance would be needed should he leave this summer.

They add that both RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers have admirers at Spurs, but that neither are realistic targets in 2021.

Mourinho said following the 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City: “It is a special week also in that we played 120mins which was really, really difficult to play today again.

“I don’t think this is a situation that is going to happen many times during the season.

“Tomorrow is a day off for the players a first day off for quite a long time and then we have three days until the Europa League match, which I believe is going to bring the players to normal level in terms of their physicality to play the next match.”

Mourinho was also asked about the performance of Gareth Bale, who could start against Wolfsberger in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
