Tottenham can sign perfect Ange Postecoglou player in Man City’s Aymeric Laporte

Tottenham are busy reshaping their squad under Ange Postecoglou with goalkeeper David Raya currently among their main targets. Spurs are looking to replace wantaway captain Hugo Lloris and Brentford’s Raya – one of the best in the Premier League – is effectively up for sale with his contract expiring next summer.

The Bees are demanding £40million but Spurs are eager to broker a cheaper agreement for a shot-stopper who has admitted he wants to move on, with Manchester United and Chelsea also potential destinations. Tottenham have alternatives – such as Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili – but Raya appears the easiest deal to do at a price that suits them.

He also suits new manager Postecoglou perfectly having proven himself phenomenal with the ball at his feet for Brentford as well as a superb shot-stopper. Another top priority once a new keeper has been signed is then at centre-half, with Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier both potentially set to depart.

The north Londoners conceded 63 times in 38 league matches last term, at least 10 times more than any other team in the top 10. And there is one player who might be absolutely perfect for Postecoglou’s possession-based style – Aymeric Laporte.

The Spaniard is expected to leave Manchester City this summer after making just 12 Premier League appearances in their treble-winning campaign last term. Spurs are among the clubs keeping an eye on his situation, per Football.London.

As Postecoglou looks to implement his trademark style of play at his new club, the Aussie needs defenders comfortable on the ball who can also play in a high line. With a switch to a 4-3-3 expected, Laporte would be the ideal left-sided centre-half to pair with Cristian Romero.

While Ruben Dias and John Stones are fancied over Laporte at City, the 29-year-old is still one of the finest ball-playing defenders in Europe – and he offers so much more as well. His arrival at Spurs could have the kind of transformative impact that other serial winners Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have had at Arsenal.

Laporte could be the leader of Spurs’ revamped defence. Having him and Raya, or another keeper of a similar profile, would be a massive help for Postecoglou in his efforts to get the team playing out from the back. The problem of course will be tempting Laporte to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The former Athletic Bilbao defender will have a number of offers, including from La Liga champions Barcelona. What Spurs can offer him is a guaranteed starting role, a very high salary and Premier League football. But he is a Champions League-level central defender and the Londoners do not have any European football whatsoever to play next season.

The possibility of a return to his home country could also prove too tempting to reject. What’s for sure, a deal will take plenty of negotiating on Daniel Levy’s part. But if he could pull it off, Spurs would be landing one of the signings of the summer and a player who can have a huge impact on and off the pitch, just as Jesus and Zinchenko have for Arsenal.
