Tottenham boss Antonio Conte will be forced into a rethink when he names his starting XI to face Leeds on Sunday after losing Cristian Romero to injury. The centre-back, who signed on an initial loan from Atalanta earlier this summer, picked up a muscle injury whilst playing for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Brazil last night.

Romero was seen clutching his hamstring early in the second half and was therefore taken off the field.

The defender appeared to be in pain when feeling the strain, which would suggest the problem will rule him out of this weekend’s contest at the very least.

He is set to undergo scans on the injury before returning to Hotspur Way.

Conte is also expected to be without fellow starter Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg against Leeds.

The Dane did not play for his country during the international break after picking up an injury in the 0-0 draw at Everton 10 days ago.

Hojbjerg is said to have been struggling as a result of the horror tackle from Mason Holgate that saw the Toffees man shown a straight red card.

He travelled to meet up with the Euro 2020 semi-finalists and sat out of the win over the Faroe Islands.

There was hope Hojbjerg would then feature against Scotland but the game was still considered too early for him.

Tottenham are still hopeful that their midfield leader can prove his fitness before Sunday.

Conte will definitely be without youngster Oliver Skipp though, who is suspended after picking up five yellow cards.

There is good news for Spurs though in the sense that a number of their forwards are not firing on all cylinders.

Heung-min Son was on target for South Korea against Iraq on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane returns to north London having netted back-to-back first-half hat-tricks – including four goals against San Marino – for England.

Forgotten man Steven Bergwijn also scored the crucial winner for the Netherlands against Norway to book their place at the World Cup.

Conte has spent the international break working with the club’s non-international players at their Enfield training ground.

This weekend will be Tottenham’s first home Premier League match since his appointment.
