Tottenham have been given a new Antonio Conte issue to worry about with Roma reportedly ‘seriously interested’ in making him their next manager. The Italian has previously been heavily linked with a return to Juventus but could end up joining another Serie A side instead with current Giallorossi boss Jose Mourinho tipped for the Portugal job.

Spurs have seen a huge improvement since he replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in November 2021, achieving qualification for the Champions League despite the club’s dire start to the season. He started the current campaign on the front foot leading the club to their best-ever start to a Premier League season after 10 matches but results declined ahead of the international break, picking up just two wins in five league games.

Conte’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is yet to begin talks over a new deal, leading to suggestions that he could be set to leave the club in the coming months. There has been speculation that he is unhappy and may need to be heavily backed in the transfer window to be convinced to stay.

He has previously been strongly linked with a return to Juventus but Tottenham may have another club to concern themselves with reports from Italy suggesting Roma are ‘seriously interested in making him their new boss if Mourinho takes the Portugal job.

The reports suggest that the European Conference Champions are confident of holding on to their manager despite the interest from Portugal. It has even been said that Mourinho could split himself between both jobs however this is unlikely to be a great fit for Roma given their ambitions.

As a result, they have considered alternatives with Conte coming up in conversation. Should the Italian end up making the move to the Italian capital he would follow Mourinho’s footsteps exactly, as the 59-year-old took up the job following his departure from north London.

For his part, Conte has been coy on speculation that he will not sign a new deal, suggesting it is up to the club to make the evaluation not him.

“My contract expires in June, until that moment the club has to make the best evaluation,” he told reporters ahead of the break for the World Cup. “I think that everything you need to deserve and it will be important to see the rest of the season and if we are happy with the improvement we are doing.

“I think that every situation it’s important to deserve. From my side, it’s important to feel that I deserve a new contract, to sign a new contract with this club. I have to feel this. We will take with the club and find the best solution.

“But you know, I think when you start a path with a club the dream is to stay here for many years and try to build something important. I think it’s very important the relationship you create with the players, the club and the environment around you.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Roma will eventually end up making a move for Conte but Spurs supporters will be hopeful of keeping hold of their manager in the longer term.
