Tottenham have been backed to sign Manchester United captain Harry Maguire in January. Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara reckons the England defender would be a good signing for his old club and solve a problem position at the back.

Maguire starred for England during their World Cup campaign in Qatar. But he will now return to United, likely to again be the third-choice centre-back for Erik ten Hag.

He has been out of favour for his club since August, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane the preferred partnership. Spurs have conceded 21 goals in their 15 Premier League matches so far this season, almost double that of the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle.

O’Hara has been heavily critical of the Tottenham defence, especially Davinson Sanchez. He reckons upgrading at the back is a necessity for Antonio Conte and says Maguire would be a wise addition.

O’Hara said on talkSPORT: “Tottenham has been a shout maybe for a centre-half. I know we need a centre-half.

“[United[ are going to lose money. Say Spurs come in for him in January, I’d take him at Tottenham by the way. We need a centre-half.”

Maguire joined United from Leicester for a world-record fee for a defender of £80million in 2019. Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy agrees with O’Hara that the Red Devils would get nowhere near that much for Maguire.

However, he can see him going to Spurs for half of that amount. Cundy said: “They’re not going to get anywhere near the £80m they paid for him.

“If they get somewhere near half of that I think that’s where you’re at.” To which O’Hara replied: “I’d pay £40m for him.”

United resume their campaign next week with a Carabao Cup clash at home to Burnley. Ten Hag has challenged Maguire to produce his international form at domestic level upon his return.

The Dutchman said: “I can only back him. It’s clear he is good enough to play at the highest level. Then it is up to him to show that confidence on the pitch, and he didn’t show that in all the games.

“He had a period in Manchester where he performed badly and then, of course, there are difficulties. For England, he has good games almost all the time.

“We want him to bring that back to Manchester with him so he can bring it on the pitch for Manchester United. I expect from him and the team knows what they expect from him. If he does that, he will be a great player for us.”
