Tottenham have been backed to make Julian Nagelsmann, who has been labelled a ‘mini-Jose Mourinho’ in the past, their next manager. Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes chairman Daniel Levy will look to recreate the impact that Thomas Tuchel has had at Chelsea by appointing the German.

Spurs sacked Mourinho on Monday after a disappointing season which has seen left with an uphill battle to secure European qualification.

Though he led them to this season’s Carabao Cup final, Mourinho also saw his side crash out of the Europa League at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb.

After three games without a win in the Premier League and amid mounting criticism of Tottenham’s style of play under the Portuguese, Levy decided to relieve the manager of his duties.

It has been a costly 18 months for the Londoners, who are also facing the possibility of captain Harry Kane demanding a departure this summer.

With Champions League qualification looking unlikely, perhaps the only thing that will keep Kane at Tottenham would be the appointment of an exciting, attacking-minded manager.

Spurs do not have to look far to see where that combination can work well, with Tuchel turning around Chelsea’s fortunes in stunning style since being appointed in January.

As well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, the Blues have also broken back into the top four.

And Agbonlahor thinks that Tuchel’s success will lead Levy to appoint Nagelsmann, who was called a “mini Mourinho” while assistant coach at Hoffenheim.

“I can only see Nagelsmann,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“Daniel Levy will look at Tuchel at Chelsea and the impact he’s had. That new school type of manager. He will look at him and think ‘Ok, you know what? I want to bring in somebody like him.’

“100 per cent, he’s the only target. They won’t get for somebody like Brendan Rodgers, who’s a great manager.

“They will bring in somebody like Nagelsmann who’s doing very well and can take Spurs where they want to be. I think they’ll hold out for him.

“That’s why nobody will be announced to the end of the season when he’s available.”

Still only 33-years-old, Nagelsmann has emerged as one of the brightest managerial talents in football across his spells in charge of Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

After three years at Hoffenheim, during which he led them from the relegation zone to the Champions League, the German oved to Leipzig.

Renowned for his tactical flexibility and high-pressing style, Nagelsmann has helped Leipzing to emerge as Bayern Munich’s closest challengers in the Bundesliga.
