Tottenham’s assistant manager Cristian Stellini has hit back at criticisms about the club’s style of play by suggesting the same issues are affecting all big teams with the packed football schedule. The Italian also suggested his players are saving themselves for the end of games, explaining their recent first-half issues.

Tottenham have been widely criticised in recent games after an alarming drop-off in form. The club experienced their best-ever start to a Premier League season after 10 matches but have faltered since losing three out of their last four domestically.

“I watched many games and in this particular last month, it’s not easy to find attractive football because many teams or maybe best team in this league but in all the leagues in Europe,” he explained before Spurs League Cup match with Nottingham Forest. “We are playing a lot and sometimes you have to manage the energy and every team has problem in the last five games. I didn’t see a really attractive football for everyone. Maybe only from teams that didn’t play Europe competitions.

“So we can say that because we know very well how difficult is to manage the energy in the last month so Liverpool has problems. Everyone has problems and we play a great match. And we cannot say we didn’t play an attractive football last game. We are happy we maybe use a particular time in the game but that’s it for everyone. This is for anyone.”
