- Assistant boss Cristian Stellini apologised to fans after the Leicester result
Cristian Stellini has offered fans an apology after his Tottenham side were thrashed 4-1 by Leicester.
Despite taking an early lead through Rodrigo Bentancur, Spurs crumbled throughout the game as Namalys Mendy, James Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho and Harvey Barnes all got on the Foxes scoresheet.
The assistant manager, who completed media duties in Antionio Conte’s place while the manager recovers from surgery, pulled no punches in his assessment of Tottenham’s performance.
‘Our approach to the game was not really bad,’ he told the BBC, ‘we scored. We had an advantage in that moment. Our game changed completely.
‘We struggled a lot, we suffered, we lost after the goal 10 or 12 tackles. We’re disappointed. We have to apologise because our performance wasn’t good enough.

The loss was a missed opportunity for Spurs in a game where a win could have put them fourth
The Foxes are now up to 13th and have scored 10 goals in their past three league games
‘Their first goal was a great goal. The second ball in a set-piece was good. But you have to continue to play like we started the game. We have lost too many tackles, too many duels. This comes from strength inside of you.’
The loss will be a big blow to Spurs fans as it comes after an impressive win over Manchester City last week, and Newcastle’s draw with Bournemouth on Saturday means a Tottenham win would have put them fourth in the league.
Addressing the drop off since the City win, Stellini added: ‘The last game was a great win. We have to be consistent in our performance. Our approach was not bad but we struggled too much. We’re disappointed.
‘It happened also last season after we beat Manchester City, we lost against Burnley. It’s not changing. We want to change. That has to come from inside of you, inside of the team. You have to show the desire. Today only in the start of the game we showed this. Maybe we thought it was an easy game but it’s never an easy game.’
On Conte, who returned to the touchline today, the assistant boss said: ‘He’s OK. He’s absolutely disappointed at the moment. He has to take it easy in this moment and find the energy. When he’ll feel better for sure he’ll come back like normal but he needs time.’
Conte’s side will next be in Premier League action when they face West Ham next Sunday.
Stellini said Antonio Conte was ‘OK but disappointed’ after the game, as the Spurs boss continues to recover from surgery.
