Ben Mee netted the game-deciding effort on 71 minutes, having steered a header beyond Hugo Lloris at the far post much to the frustration of manager Conte.
Football fans were able to see the funny side of their dismay, however.
‘Tottenham left it all at the Etihad,’ one Arsenal fan said, alongside a skull emoji.
Ben Mee scored a late winner for the home side, which lifted them closer to top-flight safety
‘Beat Man City at the Etihad only to turn around and lose to Burnley just four days later is the most absolute Tottenham Hotspur thing ever,’ a second said.
A third wrote: ‘Beat Man City then lose to Burnley. It’s the history of Tottenham.’
‘Celebrated a win against City like it was a trophy only to lose to Burnley,’ said a fourth.
‘Typical Spurs performance’ was the verdict of another Twitter user, who posted a spot the difference photo showing Tottenham’s badge and several bottles.

Almost immediately after the restart, Son Heung-min swung in a free-kick from the right in the direction of frontman Kane, who could only nod against the bar.
