Tottenham scouts made a check on James Ward-Prowse during Southampton’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

At 28, the Southampton captain does not fit the profile for many of the elite clubs but his quality means he will still be on a number of checklists.

Tottenham and Newcastle are among those waiting to see what Southampton will ask for Ward-Prowse should they go down.

The midfielder, who has been at the Saints since 2003, will almost certainly leave the club if they are relegated.

He has made over 400 appearances for the club since making his professional debut, scoring 86 goals.

Spurs also want Leicester’s James Maddison, though he will cost the club £50million

It’s expected Southampton will clear out the majority of their squad if they are to be in the Championship next season, while Tottenham will too look to re-build.

As Mail Sport revealed, Spurs have another Newcastle target, Leicester City’s £50m-rated James Maddison as their priority for the creative midfield slot but they are also monitoring Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White for that role.

Maddison could leave Leicester in the summer, especially if they are relegated, and is being monitored by several of the Premier League’s top teams ahead of a summer bid.

His current team-mate keeper Dean Henderson is also on Spurs’ list along with Brentford’s David Raya as they search for a goalkeeper.

Wolves defender Max Kilman is another under consideration at Tottenham. They watched Lyon’s Castello Lukeba against Strasbourg on Friday also but are still to be convinced by the 20-year-old defender.
