Tottenham and Man Utd in agreement on £40m valuation with transfer on brink

Manchester United and Tottenham are said to be in agreement that Brentford’s £40million asking price for David Raya is too high with both clubs reportedly willing to walk away from negotiations. Raya has earned rave reviews as part of Brentford’s dream run in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old’s experience and impressive displays for the west London club have attracted the attention of clubs all over Europe. Both Tottenham and United are said to be in the market for a new No 1 this summer and Raya had been at the top of their respective wishlists.

But a deal for Raya could be off the table before negotiations have even fully begun. According to the Evening Standard, neither Tottenham or United are prepared to bid as high as £40m for the Spaniard.

Thomas Frank confirmed at the end of the season that Raya was up for sale, reiterating the club’s asking price. He said: “You all know the price – £40m – and absolutely it’s realistic.

“I think it is too much, in general, the money that is paid in football. But in the current market and at his level, he has been at least a top-four keeper in the Premier League this season.

“If you look at those players, in such a crucial position, then I am not in doubt.” Tottenham’s current No 1 Lloris has just 12 months left on his current contract, but is expected to leave this summer.

Raya is seen as the ideal replacement for Lloris, but Tottenham have been linked with other options such as Jan Oblak, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jordan Pickford. United are in a similar situation with David de Gea, although he’s currently out of contract this summer.

Reports have indicated that De Gea could be handed a new deal at Old Trafford and Raya has been targeted as a possible replacement. United are also being linked with Portuguese shot-stopper Diogo Costa, but they would supposedly have to pay the £65m release clause in his Porto contract.

Brentford already appear to have signed a replacement for David Raya with Mark Flekken arriving for £11m.
