Tony Adams stormed out of Arsenal training after Wenger made him look silly
Tony Adams stormed out of Arsenal training after Arsene Wenger banned offsides.
Gunners icon Adams, 55, was Wenger's captain when they won the double in 1998 and 2002. A mainstay in the Frenchman's defence after his appointment in September 1996, Adams and Wenger formed a successful captain and manager partnership – but they didn't always see eye to eye.
On one occasion at a training camp in Switzerland, the former England international fumed at his boss as he tried to ban offsides. The move benefitted Arsenal's attacking players, but Adams wasn't very impressed at what he described as "schoolboy stuff."
Speaking to The Times about the incident, he said: "I walked off in Switzerland at a training camp. I said, 'No that’s not for me'. I got so angry. I was newly recovering and didn’t have the booze to suppress my feelings.
"Why was I angry? It made me look silly, and I don’t like looking silly. It was great for the forwards, there were people all round the place scoring goals and the score was 10-10.

"That’s not my game. I want to keep a clean sheet here and I want to have offsides. I’m not having forwards stand behind me. That’s schoolboy stuff."
Adams kept plenty of clean sheets during his 19 seasons at Highbury, helping the club to 13 trophies alongside countless individual accolades. He was named Arsenal Player of the Season three times and made the top-flight Team of the Year on four occasions.
Since retiring in 2002, the Romford-born defender has enjoyed a sporadic career in coaching, taking in stops at Wycombe Wanderers, Portsmouth and Spanish side Granada.
Adams once claimed that he didn't learn anything from Gunners legend Wenger, but that didn't stop him praising the Frenchman as the club's best ever manager following his exit in 2017.
Posting on Instagram, he wrote: "Move over Herbert (Chapman), Arsene Wenger the greatest Arsenal Manager." Just not when it came to removing offsides in training, it seems.
