Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon it has been confirmed.

The 29-year-old, who collapsed earlier this year during the Championship play-off final that saw the Hatters claim Premier League promotion, went to ground, with manager Rob Edwards ushering his players away from Lockyer.

The scary scenes silenced the supporters in attendance at the Vitality Stadium, as paramedics attended to Lockyer on the pitch. And it has now been confirmed by the club that the Welsh international suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

A statement on social media from Luton read: "Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher.

"He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides.

"Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside. We would like to thank everyone for their support, concern and loving messages for Locks."

Worryingly, this is now the second time Lockyer has collapsed on a football pitch within the space of a year. Back in May, he had to go off after just 12 minutes at Wembley in Luton's dramatic extra-time penalty shootout win over Coventry City.

Following that game, Lockyer underwent surgery for an irregular heartbeat after being rushed to hospital from Wembley.
