Tom Huddlestone’s assist for Man Utd U21s has fans wanting him in first-team

Manchester United fans are adamant Tom Huddlestone should be promoted to the first-team squad after producing a mesmerising pass for their late winner in the EFL Trophy.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City midfielder, 35, was signed by the Red Devils during the summer transfer window as a player-coach for their under-21 side and has featured as a substitute in both EFL Trophy matches this season.

Huddlestone's debut in the youthful competition didn't get off to the brightest of beginnings. Man Utd conceded an equaliser against Barrow just 60 seconds after his introduction, but Mark Dempsey's side rallied to claim all three points – thanks to Omari Forson's deflected effort in the 71st minute.

However, his second substitute appearance proved far more fruitful as Huddlestone registered a sensational assist to solidify the Red Devils' position at the top of Group G.

Winning back possession with a well-timed challenge, the former England international spreads the play to the far side with a beautiful 40-yard lob, straight into the path of the on-running Alejandro Garnacho, who coolly slipped the ball into the bottom right corner.

The pinpoint pass drew rave reviews on social media with fans immediately suggesting Huddlestone should be drafted into the first-team picture.

"Should be in the first team," commented one fan in reply to video footage of Huddlestone's remarkable pass. "Who played that pass?" quizzed another alongside a shooting star emoji, signifying the out-of-this-world pass.

"Is that Zidane that assisted that goal" praised a third. "He's one of the most underrated players he's had some of the best passing the worlds seen," hailed a fourth.

While one fan quipped: "What a pass from Huddlestone player for the future for sure."

Pioneered ahead of the 2016/17 season, the EFL Trophy consists of all 48 teams from League One and League Two as well as 16 invited Category One standard academy sides from the Premier League and the Championship – who must ensure a minimum of six players on their team-sheet were aged under 21 on June 30 of each respective season.

However, the regulations also stipulate that academy sides are permitted to name two players aged over 21 as long as they have made 40 or more senior appearances.
