Todd Boehly had nothing to smile about on Tuesday night as he buried his hands in his pocket, wore a look of resignation and headed to Chelsea’s dressing room to speak to players after their Champions League exit.

Chelsea suffered another 2-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid to bow out 4-0 at the quarter-final stage.

Boehly, who labelled his expensively assembled squad ’embarrassing’ after a 2-1 loss to Brighton in the Premier League last week, once again headed for the confines of the dressing room for a 10-minute chat, but this time appearing totally deflated.

The American was pictured with co-owner Behdad Eghbali walking across the pitch at the end, before going in to see Frank Lampard and his players.

‘I knew this club with a certain class during the Abramovich era, but today I find it lacking. It’s very hard for me to see how they got rid of certain people,’ club legend Didier Drogba said afterwards. ‘They should go back to the principles and values they had.’

Interim boss Frank Lampard saw his side beaten 2-0 after a Rodrygo brace for Real Madrid

Their exit from the Champions League means Chelsea’s season is officially over, with no competition left to play for.

They are 11th in the Premier League and suffered third-round exits in both domestic cups, prior to being eliminated from the Champions League.

Boehly has been eager to splash the cash and has delivered £600million investment in the playing squad, only to go backwards.

He elected to axe boss Thomas Tuchel, who had previously delivered Chelsea a Champions League title, for Graham Potter, who has himself since been binned with Lampard now holding fort until the end of the season.

After the 2-1 league defeat to Brighton, furious fans directed their ire down towards Boehly’s box, making their feelings clear.

The Chelsea owner then made his way to the dressing room and addressed the squad once interim boss Lampard had delivered his post-match team talk.

As well as expressing his disappointment at how Chelsea’s season had panned out, Boehly tried to lift Lampard’s players ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final second leg – but it had little-to-no effect as they were well beaten.

It has been a disastrous season for Boehly with Chelsea 11th in the league and out of all cups

After the weekend loss at home against Brighton, Chelsea fans were furious with Boehly at the final whistle before he made his way down to the dressing room afterwards

Boehly visiting the dressing room is not unusual, but the nature of his message – calling players ’embarrassing’ and ‘singling one senior star out’ – raised eyebrows.

Yet Lampard said: ‘I am comfortable with that. I had my things to say after the game.

‘There is maybe some criticism of our old owner of not coming to games and being around that wasn’t always true.

‘I remember moments as a player of owners first coming into dressing rooms, I remember being happy. I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

‘I had my things to say, if an owner wants to come in and be positive and speak to the players, they can do that.

‘No problem with that, it shows passion and that’s the first thing that I like.’
