Todd Boehly humiliated again as Chelsea team force club to re-hire sacked physio

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has suffered more embarrassment after the Blues re-hired a physio they axed just months ago.

After six years at Stamford Bridge, Jose Calvarro was let go in September as new owners Boehly and Clearlake Capital cleared the decks at the start of a new era following their takeover. The respected Spaniard left along with long-serving medical chiefs Thierry Laurent and Paco Biosca.

Calvarro joined Italian side Como, where Chelsea legend Dennis Wise is president and former Chelsea and Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas is a player.

However, Blues players were said to be unhappy with Calvarro’s departure, with some feeling the upheaval led to a spate of injuries ahead of the World Cup. With Calvarro contracted to Serie B Como, the Blues have only been able to bring him back as a consultant one day per week, working with the squad every Sunday.

Back in October, following the mass changes to the medical department, then-manager Graham Potter said: “Clearly, we want to always try to improve, and that’s an area we can probably improve.”

However, it proved to be a retrograde step, prompting the Blues to bring Calvarro back, albeit in a limited capacity.

Re-hiring him back represents a climb down and is another embarrassment for the US-led ownership, who have splurged more than £600m over the last year, only to be left floundering in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

This week’s home defeat to Brentford was the club’s fifth in a row, their worst sequence for 30 years.

Club legend Frank Lampard has failed to stop the rot following the sacking of Potter and more changes are expected once a permanent successor is appointed, set to be former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Up next for the Blues is a visit to top of the table Arsenal on Tuesday.
