Timo Werner bags hat-trick to compound Chelsea’s misery after Southampton defeat

Timo Werner showed Chelsea what they're missing with a 24 minute hat-trick for RB Leipzig.

Werner, 26, left Stamford Bridge in the summer after failing to impress in west London following his £47million move from Leipzig in 2020. Although considered unlucky at the Blues, Werner could only manage 23 goals in 89 games for the club, prompting a return to his former club this summer.

The Germany star marked his second debut for Leipzig with a goal in a 2-2 draw against Koln earlier this month. And he continued his good form with a superb hat-trick against minnows FC Teutonia Ottensen on the same night Chelsea struggled in front of goal during a 2-1 defeat to Southampton.

Werner opened his account with a well-taken finish inside the box after 18 minutes. He doubled his tally little over a minute later with a thunderous strike to make it 2-0. And he completed his treble just before half-time with a straightforward effort to increase Leipzig's advantage to four.

His was a standout performance on a night when Leipzig advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a resounding 8-0 win over their Regionalliga opponents.

Meanwhile, his old side missed more than their fair share of chances in a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Southampton. Raheem Sterling had put the Blues ahead, but goals from Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong turned the game on its head before half-time.

Chelsea had opportunities to level through Armando Broja and Kai Havertz but were unable to find that crucial equaliser as Thomas Tuchel complained that his side were too easily "pushed off balance" by their the superior Saints.

He said: "We started well in all the games almost but obviously we are struggling with our focus and consistency in matches. We struggled to find answers and find the way back if things don't go in our direction. Things did go in our direction today but then we struggled after the equaliser.

"I don't know if concern is the right word. I absolutely dislike losing. It is the second time this season and I don't think it takes a lot to beat us and this I don't like.

"We try to win matches and the way we do this is something we need to understand as fast as possible. I also don't understand why we are in this situation with injuries to all midfield. I think in the first 20 minutes we created half chances but struggled to score. That is also not brand new for us and that doesn't necessarily have the consequence you can lose matches, you can win 1-0."
