Three Premier League flops find the net as Fenerbahce win Turkish thriller 5-4

The Turkish Super Lig has somehow become somewhat of a final destination for players who have not quite cut it in the Premier League.

This season saw the likes of Tottenham ace Dele Alli, Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi, and many more pack up their bags in England to move to Turkey. While the atmosphere and history of their teams cannot be questioned, the division is not regarded amongst the finest divisions in Europe.

But while it may find itself within the European elite, that does not mean it is without its excitement. And this was evident during Fenerbahce’s jaw dropping victory over Fatih Karagumruk.

The Turkish giants ran out 5-4 winners over Fatih in a pulsating game at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. However, the most eyebrow raising part of the game, from a Premier League perspective, were the individuals who got themselves on the scoresheet.

Five of the nine goals that flew in on an extraordinary evening of Turkish football were scored by three very familiar names. The game got off to an explosive start as former Braga ace Miguel Crespo opened the scoring after nine minutes.

However, former Liverpool and Chelsea forward Fabio Borini then levelled the scoring seven minutes after his side Fatih fell behind. Eight minutes later, the Italian’s side were ahead courtesy of a strike from Jean Evrad Kouassi.

Four minutes after Fatih went ahead, ex-West Ham United ace Enner Valencia popped up to drag his side back onto level terms just before the half an hour mark. A slow start to the second half, then gave way to all out bedlam as Valencia swept home a penalty, before Borini replied four minutes later with a spot-kick of his own.

Seven minutes then passed before Valencia put his side back into the lead with, you guessed it, another penalty. Turkish striker Burak Kapacak thought he secured a point for Fatih when he equalised in the 83 only for his side’s hearts to be broken by ex-Chelsea hitman Batshuayi, who stole the points for Fenerbahce with a wonderful finish in the 95th minute.

It was a passionate, goal laden, edge of the seat, but yet nostalgic affair, particularly for Premier League fans who remember those stars at their former clubs. In other words, it was everything Turkish football appears to be about.
