Thomas Tuchel’s first meeting with Abramovich on pitch after Chelsea triumph
Thomas Tuchel will no doubt be in the good books after leading Chelsea to their second Champions League win.
The German took over at Stamford Bridge in January, also guiding the Blues to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup final.
Despite many voicing concerns at the harshness of Frank Lampard’s sacking, Tuchel has completely justified Chelsea chief Roman Abramovich’s decision to make the change.
The former Borussia Dortmund and PSG boss was congratulated by the Russian after the game, with the pair sharing a few words after the Blues saw off Manchester City.
Kai Havertz’s goal sealed the win for West London club, with their Mancunian opponents having no answer for Chelsea’s defensive stoicism.
Abramovich seemed in a good mood during the game, high-fiving former Blues player Andriy Shevchenko when the goal went in, and congratulating Tuchel after the game.
"I think I have a new contract already,” the 47-year-old said.
"My manager said something to me about it – but I don't know for sure.
"It was a special moment to meet the owner for the first time on the pitch.
"It was the best time for that – or maybe the worst because it can only get worse after this."
Tuchel will have the backing of Abramovich this summer, and will be expected to mount a title challenge next season.
"We will speak tomorrow. I want him to know that I am still hungry for more and that I already want the next title.
“We have a very strong group of players here and I want to close the gap.
“I want to dedicate this victory to my parents, my wife and my kids, who were in the stadium.”
