Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been warned his team’s style of play could prevent the Blues from signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Haaland is one of the most sought-after players in the world at the moment.
Chelsea are believed to be determined to sign Haaland in the upcoming transfer window.
The Blues have joined a list of clubs interested in the Dortmund wonderkid, who has a £68million release clause active in his contract from 2022 onwards.
Despite spending £250m on new players last summer, they are apparently ready to break the bank to sign Haaland, who has scored 27 goals in 26 games this season.
However, Paul Merson believes Chelsea’s lack of firepower this season will cause Haaland to doubt the move.
He explained that the Norwegian will be worried about the fact Chelsea have struggled in front of goal this season and be cautious that their style of play doesn’t suit him.
Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud have all competed for the starting spot up front, but none have been able to hold down the centre-forward position.
And despite Chelsea officials believing Haaland can fill the void, Merson believes he might be better off elsewhere.
“I think next season Thomas Tuchel will be saying to the board, to Roman Abramovich, I need a top-drawer centre-forward,” he said to Sky Sports.
“You will not win the Premier League, or be anywhere close, if you don’t have players around the top-scorer mark.
“At the moment, I don’t see Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud being in that category.
“The way they are now, if you’re Erling Haaland and Chelsea come in and say we’ll pay £110m or whatever it is, we’ll give you this much a week, he will be looking at the same time at the way Chelsea play, and that they’ve only scored eight goals in seven games.
“You can only score goals if there’s chances and Chelsea haven’t made a lorry load of chances.
“Liverpool’s finishing against Sheffield United was poor, but they made a lorry load of chances.
“Chelsea need to be showing more than what they’re showing at the moment.
“Because if I’m a world-class centre-forward and Chelsea want me, I’m having a look and saying to my agent ‘they don’t really make a lot of chances, do they?’.
“Even though they’re a good team, I’m not getting five or six chances in the game. I’m working on scraps.”
