Thomas Tuchel sends message to Chelsea youngsters after Mason Mount dropped

Thomas Tuchel has insisted he will provide the perfect environment for young players to flourish at Chelsea, providing they show the "hunger" to succeed.

The Blues' new boss opted for experience over youth in his first match in charge against Wolves on Wednesday, dropping Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Reece James to the bench from the team that played Leicester.

He admitted prior to kick-off that the short timeframe he has had to work with the players was the sole reason behind his "unfair" decisions, as the likes of Olivier Giroud, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger were handed surprise starts.

But in his first official interview as manager, Tuchel told Chelsea's official website his selection was to the contrary and he plans to call on the club's 'exciting' academy prospects going forward.

"I like that we have young players and also players from the academy which is crucial for me for any team in the world and Chelsea is famous for having one of the best academies in Europe," Tuchel said.

"There must be a way that we push the guys.

"We mustn't forget that it takes some time to be part of one of the most demanding teams in the world and of course we play for titles and we play for results so if you want to make it here it's one of the biggest and toughest challenges for the youngsters.

"But we will never stop to push them, we will guide them, we will help them and we have a lot of young players, especially up front, a lot of young players from Germany and from foreign countries in the academy.

"That excites us because it's always nice to guide them, help them, teach them, and to follow their development."

Mount will no doubt feel particularly aggrieved at being left out of Tuchel's first starting XI.

The 22-year-old was a key player under former boss Frank Lampard and even captained Chelsea for the first time on Sunday.

Abraham can also feel hard done by, given he fired a hat-trick in the FA Cup win over Luton, while Timo Werner was also in good form despite missing a penalty, but joined the contingent on the subs' bench.

Even Christian Pulisic – who worked with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund – was omitted from the starting XI.

However, Tuchel is adamant each player will have a chance to impress, and believes the club's youth can form the crux of his new era at Stamford Bridge.

"For me it's like a feeling you get when you have hungry players that have to earn their results that have to earn their titles here and didn't do it in the other clubs but they want to do it here, it sets for me the basic [foundations] for a certain spirit, for a certain style, he added.

"That means we want to show a certain intensity and a certain hunger to make our supporters proud of us."
