Thomas Muller 'will RETURN to the German national team for Euro 2020'

Thomas Muller ‘will RETURN to the German national team for Euro 2020’ with boss Joachim Low ‘ready to recall Bayern Munich star’ despite placing him in exile with Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng after disastrous 2018 World Cup in Russia

  • Germany boss Joachim Low needs to name his Euro 2020 squad on May 19
  • Reports in Germany say that Thomas Muller will be brought back from his exile
  • Muller, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng haven’t played since 2018 World Cup
  • Low previously opened the door for a return and Muller is said to be set for a spot

Germany boss Joachim Low has reportedly called Thomas Muller to discuss a return to the national team in time for Euro 2020.

Following a disastrous World Cup in Russia in 2018 where Germany failed to escape the group stage, finishing bottom of Group F behind Sweden, Mexico and South Korea, there was a changing of the guard.

Low announced in March 2019 that Muller (31), Mats Hummels (32) and Jerome Boateng (32) would not be part of his future plans – with none of them adding to their respective 100, 70 and 76 caps since then.

Bild on Tuesday ran the story that Low called Muller to discuss bringing him back into the side

But, according to Bild, the door has now been opened for Muller to return to the side for this summer’s rearranged European championships.

Squad sizes for the tournament have been increased to 26 players and the latest information out of Germany is that a formal invitation has been extended to the Bayern Munich forward.

Low is leaving his post as Germany manager at the end of the tournament and after their humiliation in Russia was followed by more recent turmoil for the national team this news signals Low’s desire to recapture the form that saw Muller and Co win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Bild’s report details that Low has been meeting in Berlin with his coaching staff and national team director Oliver Bierhoff to draft out the 26-man squad for the Euros – with just over a week until the official announcement.

Low has been determined to blood the next generation of Germany’s stars but his strategy is yet to work.

Spain thrashed them 6-0 in November to hand Germany their worst ever defeat in a competitive match.

In a 2022 World Cup qualifier on March 31, Germany suffered one of their most embarrassing ever losses, going down 2-1 to North Macedonia in Duisburg.

With Die Mannschaft’s results inconsistent since the exiles of Muller, Hummels and Boateng, there has been a clamour to see Low reverse his decision.

Back in February, Low ever so slightly opened the door at the prospect of bringing Muller and Hummels – but not Boateng – back into the fold.

Low has looked to use Germany’s next generation but they were beaten by North Macedonia

Germany’s biggest sports newspaper Bild ran with the simple headline: ‘How embarrassing’

He told Kicker: ‘Special circumstances can justify an interruption in the upheaval.

‘That (the future of the trio) will be a difficult and important question, also for me. The character of Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels is that they don’t oppress others.’

Pressure intensified when Toni Kroos turned the screw on Low back in March by calling for his team-mates to be reinstated in the Germany squad.

‘I believe that in the end you have to plan a little ahead,’ he told Sky Germany.

‘I am now questioning whether the coach’s plan has worked out in the way he wanted it to be.

‘It is clear that the intention after the World Cup was relatively clear. And now you have to find the best possible team for the next tournament.’
