Thomas Frank reveals Brentford star's price tag amid Man Utd & Spurs links
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has said that Manchester United and Tottenham will have to pay upwards of £40million for star goalkeeper David Raya.
Chelsea news, exclusives and analysis
The Spanish shot-stopper looks set to leave the Gtech Community Stadium this summer having refused several offers to extend his contract that expires in 2024.
As such, Brentford are ready to cash-in on Raya and are already preparing for life without the 27-year-old, having entered talks with Freiburg over signing Dutch keeper Mark Flekken.
This is all good news for United and Spurs who have been linked with Raya for months, with the latter leading the race for his signature as they look for Hugo Lloris’ long-term replacement.
The Red Devils’ interest has cooled somewhat with David de Gea set to stay at Old Trafford despite his numerous, high-profile errors.
Chelsea have also shown interest in the past but seem to have turned their attention to Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, though incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino may chose to keep faith with Edouard Mendy or Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Whoever does make a move for Raya will have to spend big however, with Frank naming his star’s price tag in his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Brentford’s game against West Ham.
‘There is no doubt that David is a case where there is one year left and we will see what will happen. We’re very happy with David here.
‘Everyone knows he is a £40m-plus goalkeeper if anyone is interested and we are prepared just like in any position.
‘There is a possibility he’ll leave this summer maybe, for the right price, and if that happens then of course we need to be prepared.’
Frank also addressed the future of Bees striker Ivan Toney who has also been linked with a big money move to United thanks to his incredible form that has seen him score 20 Premier League goals so far this season – only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have more.
He added: ‘I love Ivan and I think it’s fantastic what he has achieved here and there’s more to achieve here for him. I’m really really happy he’s a Brentford player.
‘He did well in League One, then he did well in the Championship and got promoted, he got 12 Premier League goals last year, now he’s on 20, hopefully getting even more, what is the limit? I think he has good potential.
‘I know he’s not 22, but look at some of the best strikers in the world: [Robert] Lewandowski, [Karim] Benzema, they seem like fine wines getting better, they know how to be in good positions. I think Ivan will only get better and better.’
