Arsenal hero Thierry Henry mocked Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford on Wednesday night by telling him to use his brain. Rashford was unable to get his name on the scoresheet as the Red Devils beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Premier League.

Rashford spearheaded the United attack at Old Trafford as the 13-time Premier League champions went in search of their sixth top-flight victory of the campaign. And the ace could have broken the deadlock in the first half after being played through on goal by Fred. But Rashford blasted his shot straight at Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who diverted the ball wide of the post for a corner.

United carved out a hatful of chances as they dominated proceedings in the north west. And Erik ten Hag’s side finally took the lead just after the interval as Fred’s deflected effort wrongfooted Lloris and found its way into the bottom corner of the net. And after Rashford had seen another fierce drive fisted away by Lloris, the hosts put the game to bed courtesy of a sumptuous effort from Bruno Fernandes.

United could have put the icing on the cake late on when Rashford again found himself with an opening after receiving the ball in the box and cutting inside Eric Dier. But the 24-year-old England striker again failed to pick out the corner of the goal as he fired the ball straight at Lloris for a third time. And Henry insisted that Rashford needed to do better in front of goal when discussing the third chance with former United defender Patrice Evra on Amazon Prime.

“You open the goal up, just finish it – place it down here,” said the ex-France forward. “Boom. Why hit it hard on him? Side foot, goal. See you later. It was right at him, but great reactions from Hugo.”

Evra replied: “Not everyone gets your brain, Thierry.” But Henry hissed back: “No I know, but you have one – use it.”

United’s victory means they have now moved to within one point of fourth-placed Chelsea. And following the match, Red Devils boss Ten Hag said: “I think we performed better against Liverpool and Arsenal. I think you see today we developed and you can see in the last weeks we are growing in the season and becoming more proactive in and out of possession

“First you get organisation in and out of possession, then you dictate the intensity and that is what we did today. To be fair, I did not expect it before because Spurs have been solid this season. It was a magnificent performance and I hope we set a new base for the season.”
