Thiago Silva makes worrying claim after Chelsea's defeat to Manchester City
Thiago Silva admitted he had been left puzzled by Chelsea’s miserable run of results following their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City – but the veteran defender was encouraged by the team’s second-half performance at Stamford Bridge.
City announced themselves as a genuine force in this season’s title race as Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne all netted in the opening 34 minutes of Sunday’s one-sided Premier League clash before Callum Hudson-Odoi found a late consolation goal for the hosts.
The Blues were being touted as potential challengers not so long ago but have now won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions and Frank Lampard finds himself under intense pressure, with the club languishing down in eighth place.
‘No, I don’t understand what’s wrong,’ a frustrated Silva told French outlet RMC Sport shortly after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge.
‘If I understood before, I think I could have given some advice, but that’s how it is.
‘It’s football, it’s the Premier League: one of the toughest championships around the world.
‘You have to be careful, work harder, be stronger as a team, but I think the team is good, the second half was much better than the first in my opinion.’
The Brazilian continued: ‘We tried to play a little more, we managed to play.
‘I think we were superior in possession of the ball in the second half, sometimes it does not work as we want, as we have prepared, but, that’s how it is football.
‘We must prepare for the next match when it arrives.’
Chelsea have a week-long break before they play host to League Two outfit Morecambe in the third round of the FA Cup.
Lampard’s side then travel to Premier League strugglers Fulham for a much-anticipated London derby at Craven Cottage.
