Ten Hag’s ‘patience snaps’ with Sancho after Man Utd warned of struggle to sell

Premier League season preview: Man Utd

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s patience with Jadon Sancho playing as a winger has reportedly ‘snapped’. It is claimed that the Dutchman has been using Sancho as a striker in pre-season because he is fed up with his performances out wide.

Sancho – who has been linked with a summer exit – was a £73million arrival at Old Trafford in 2021. However, he has been unable to replicate the form that made him one of Europe’s most highly-sought young stars while at Borussia Dortmund.

The 23-year-old was exiled from the United team last term and told to train alone to boost his confidence and form. He showed glimpses of improvement in the second half of last season, but those moments were rare.

With several attacking stars joining since Sancho’s arrival two years ago, the England attacker has found himself pushed down the pecking order at United. Ten Hag is supposedly losing patience with the former Manchester City prospect.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag’s patience has ‘snapped’ over Sancho’s ability to play as a winger. The No 25 has instead been used in a more unfamiliar centre-forward role during the Red Devils’ preparations for the 2023-24 campaign.

Sancho also played as a No 10 last season. With Rasmus Hojlund now signed from Atalanta, it seems unlikely that the South Londoner will get regular minutes as a striker.

Some reports have claimed that United could cut their losses on Sancho this summer. However, club icon Rio Ferdinand believes the Old Trafford outfit might find offloading the outcast difficult due to his high salary.

“The thing is with someone like Sancho, wages are so big, its difficult to move him,” Ferdinand told his Vibe With Five podcast in May.

“If someone says, ‘we think you are worth half,’ the way he has been playing, he isn’t going nowhere. He isn’t moving. Loan, maybe.”

According to a report by the Daily Star in June, Premier League side Spurs were preparing a £50m offer for Sancho ahead of the summer window. However, that move has not materialised, with the North Londoners instead focusing on cheaper targets.

Sancho has endured an underwhelming return to English football over the last two years. He has scored just 12 goals in 79 appearances, assisting a further six strikes.
