Erik ten Hag admitted that he had doubts about the Manchester United job as he laid out his project during his interview for the role.
It is reported that Ten Hag is set to be appointed as the new United boss, replacing interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who has been in temporary charge since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal earlier this season.
The Dutch boss was amongst the first potential managerial candidates to be interviewed for the vacant Red Devils job and told the United board that he sees the job as a five-year project during his interview, according to The Independent.
Amongst the issues raised by ten Hag in relation to the current state of the club, physical conditioning is said to have been first on his list.
United had been wary of appointing ten Hag, who is currently the manager of Ajax, due to the mixed records of figures adapting to the Premier League from the Eredivisie in the past.
This has extended to player recruitment, with United said to be undertaking greater diligence when signing players from the Netherlands, following the underwhelming past signings of Donny van de Beek and Memphis Depay.
United's reluctance to sign players from the Eredivisie could cause early tensions with Ten Hag, given that he reportedly named several transfer targets during his interview, including several Ajax players.

He is also understood to have presented the board with a comprehensive dossier on the current United squad and argued that the club have been some way off "Champions League shape" for a considerable period of time.
Sources have previously said that the United squad are split on the potential appointment of Ten Hag and are unconvinced by his credentials.
One source told The Independent that he "has not blown people away" at the club, having also reportedly missed out on the Tottenham Hotspur job last summer due to a perceived lack of charisma.
Regardless, Ten Hag now looks set to be given the chance to implement his project at Old Trafford after five years with Ajax, in which time he has won two league and cup doubles.
